WHAT TO EXPECT :

Have you ever wanted to collect eggs straight from the henhouse? Or milk a goat? Or pull a carrots out of the ground and eat it right then and there? Do you want to learn how to plant garlic on the shortest day of the year and harvest on the longest? Do you want to get lost in cucumber vines and then make pickles with your findings. This is what the magic of childhood is made of and this is what you will find at Goat Island Farm School.

The purpose of farm school is to learn to grow food and sell food and have a lot of fun in between. Your child will learn skills that will reach every aspect of their lives. The structure of farm school is as follows:

Mornings will be spent in the garden learning how to make things grow. From the ground up we will learn soil science, planting, harvesting, marketing, botany, pollination, vermicompost, plant families, crop rotation and so much more. There will be classroom time and hands on learning to put what is taught into practice. We will learn business skills and entrepenurership and have a chance to use farm currency and host a farmers market.

Afternoon will be a topic in animal husbandry as your student gets to order baby chicks from a catalogue, learn how bees dance and the ins and outs of keeping dairy goats. We will also learn culinary skills based on the principles of Nourishing Traditions so that we can cook seasonally, make ferments and celebrate the fat of the land.

We look forward to being a part of your educational journey!
